About this property

Welcome to Hotel San Carlos

Located in downtown Phoenix at 202 N Central Ave, Hotel San Carlos has been a fixture since 1928, offering a glimpse of the city’s past through its classic, historic ambiance. The hotel’s architecture and interiors reflect an old-school charm that appeals to travelers seeking a unique, nostalgic experience rather than modern luxury. While the rooms feature kitchen facilities and air conditioning, some guests note that the decor and fittings could benefit from updates to enhance comfort.

Guests can enjoy practical amenities such as complimentary Wi-Fi, free parking, a smoke-free environment, and a business center. Though the rooftop pool is temporarily closed, the mid-level rooftop area provides an alternative space for relaxing or enjoying views of the lively surrounding neighborhood. The location is popular among visitors interested in exploring nearby attractions like the Phoenix Art Museum, Heard Museum, and the Arizona Science Center, all within easy walking distance.

The hotel caters well to those who appreciate history and convenience, particularly visitors attending events at the nearby Footprint Center or patrons of local bars, cafes, and shopping at CityScape. It is also kid-friendly but does not accommodate pets. Those traveling by air will find the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport approximately 14 minutes away by car.

Reviews highlight helpful staff and a reasonable price point, though some guests mention thin walls and smaller room sizes, which may affect overall comfort. Cleanliness and maintenance have mixed feedback, reflecting the property’s age. Overall, Hotel San Carlos suits guests who value character and location over modern amenities and who are comfortable with a modest, historically rich stay in the heart of the city.

Really nice, quaint and historic hotel. Pool was closed for repairs which really put a damper on our stay in hot Phoenix. Staff was very helpful and informative. Would definitely stay there again because of decent prices, especially when the pool is fixed. The monsoon thunderstorm was great to watch from our room that faced the main street out front. The English pasty restaurant across the street is a great place for food and there's an Irish bar right next door. For an even better experience, check out the Valley Bar in the alley across the street.

Great historic place in prime location to walk everywhere downtown. The manager Angela helped sort some issues while we were checking in and was very patient/helpful. The rooms are old-school so they’re not as luxurious as typical chains. Walls are thin too so you can hear everything. Worthy, unique experience though.

Outdated but historical building. Really gave you that old school vibe. Pool is still closed but you can go out on the mid floor roof top. Controlled AC so you might get hot. Plenty of food and shopping with in walking distance. No on site parking. All in all it was just for an experience. So it was cool.

Excellent but the cleaning lady needs to step up her game a lil bit it wasn't horrible but I think that she just went a little too fast and didn't pay attention to detail is all but other than that I loved it!

The hotel appears old and rundown, but that is actually part of its charm. Well it could be renovated, I think that would actually ruin the entire vibe and ambiance. The rooms themselves are small, at least the one that I stayed in. There is no safe in the room. The bathrooms and shower are particularly small. The water temperature kept changing spontaneously while in the shower which was kind of annoying, but really not a huge deal. There is a good Mexican restaurant on the first floor which was very good. Location is fantastic, right in the heart of downtown Phoenix.

The experience was memorable. Nearly 100 years old, lacks modern convenience yet overflows with character. Walk in the lobby and slow down to enjoy original details. So glad we went there and will definitely return.

I really enjoyed my stay here! The rooms are small, yes, but it's good for a one or two night stay. We went to a concert at the Footprint center, and it was a 10 minute walk. Saved us a lot of money on ubers and parking. The AC worked fine in our room, so I'm not sure what the other reviewers mean about it being unbearably hot because I was there in the dead of desert summer and was fine. The beds are a little uncomfortable and the sheets are rough, but those are my only complaints. Would stay here again!

Haters hate nostalgia. Babies cry when they get irritated. If you're not a hater or a baby you will love being in this particular block of the valley during your stay. As an AZ local, I can't not recommend. Which equals a recommend

Pricing: Variable pricing makes hotel rates in this digital age quite dynamic. We benefited from a last minute deal that made this hotel stay very reasonable. If you drive to the hotel, you’ll need to pay for parking. They do not offer valet, nor validate parking. When calling, the front desk recommended 21 W Garage which is about ½ block from the hotel. We didn’t have any problem with this garage and paid $15 for overnight parking. Meeting “n” Exceeding: If history, haunted legends, or celebrities are of interest to you, this hotel has unique offerings that reference a downtown Phoenix era highlighting Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, and the ill fated Leone Jensen. The location is hard to beat. We had a short 5 minute walk to our comedy show. The hotel neighbors multiple notable bars and restaurants that welcome patrons late into the night. Room to Refine: The room and public area furniture are certainly antique, wherein there are obvious signs of wear and attempts at restoration. We enjoyed pursuing the various cultural photos or art pieces but noticed even these are not well maintained. As noted in other reviews, you will hear adjacent room noise if your neighbors are rowdy. It’s unfortunate that a pool that is probably rich in history, also uniquely deep at 8 feet, is completely drained and neglected as of our stay. Summary: I’m hopeful that the hotel owners continue to invest in the preservation and history of this illustrious hotel. If amenities and contemporary touches are what you seek in a hotel, seek one of the neighboring chain hotels. If you’d like a glimpse of downtown Phoenix past, you’ll enjoy the Hotel San Carlos.
